Overview

Athenry Golf Club is a championship parkland golf course located at Palmerstown, which located between the town of Athenry & Oranmore.  The course is consistently rated highly by visitors with easy walking terrain and is enjoyed by members and visitors alike.

The Eddie Hackett designed course has been situated at Palmerstown since 1977 and was upgraded continuously since them – the following are some of the main improvements to the course:

• Following the purchase of additional land, the course was extended to 18 Holes in 1989.
• Subsequently the club purchased further land in the adjoining forestry which allowed the construction of new holes and the extension of existing holes into the forest.
• During the early 2000s numerous new greens and tees were constructed.
• In 2016, additional land was purchased which facilitated an extension of the 4th Hole.
• Finally, the club completed an extensive drainage project in 2017.

The course plays just under 6,000 metres off the back markers and has two par 5’s, twelve par 4’s, and the four par 3’s, which meander in and out of the mature woodlands.  The toughest hole is the index one 413 metres long 7th and in addition the 7th, the signature-hole 12th, in particular, provides the visitor with an unforgettable and enjoyable challenge.

Athenry has been selected by Golf Ireland as well as the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) to host many major competitions over the years and it is a testament to the quality and challenge of the course that it continues to be sought as a host for major competitions by the national organisations.
