GUI CUPS & SHIELDS CONNACHT FINALS
At the Connacht finals of the cups and shields played in Loughrea, Athenry Golf Club won The Barton Shield (1st time), the Pierce Purcell Shield (1st time) and were beaten by Ballina in the Junior Cup.
RESULTS. Barton Shield (Captain Brian Mooney) Athenry defeated County Sligo Golf Club (Rosses Point), Michael Lane & David Byrne 4 holes up after 16, Mark King & Brian O'Reilly all square after 17 holes.
Pierce Purcell Shield (Captain Pat Nally), Athenry defeated Claremorris 3.5 to 1.5. Eoin McGillicuddy & Michael Noone won 2/1, Luke Glynn & Michael Shaughnessy won 2/1, Michael Crimmins & Jimmy Flaherty won 2/1, David Donohue & Brendan Lynskey lost on 18 by one hole, Martin Naughton & Shane Donohue all square on 18 called in.
Junior Cup ( Captain Ronan Coffey ) Athenry were defeated by Ballina 3.5 to 1.5. Blaine Niland lost 5/3, Brian O'Reilly won 4/2, Peter Dolan lost 3/2, Philip Somers lost 3/1, Joe Beirne jnr called in.
The All Ireland Finals will be played at Castlerock Golf Club on September 14/15/16/17. More details later.
